Description:

A career in music therapy offers challenges, opportunities, and distinctive rewards for those interested in working with people of all ages experiencing illness or disability. Music therapists are employed in many different settings including general and psychiatric hospitals, community mental health agencies, rehabilitation centers, day care facilities, nursing, home schools and private practice.

Credentialed music therapists provide services for adults and children with psychiatric disorders, cognitive and developmental disabilities, speech and hearing impairments, physical disabilities, and neurological impairments, among others. Music therapists, as members of an interdisciplinary team, support the goals and objectives for each client within the context of the music therapy setting using music-based interventions.

The basis for interventions is rooted in a growing body of evidence underpinned by basic, mechanistic, and applied research. Dissemination and translation of findings to practice in music therapy with the inter-professional treatment team represents a growing area of scholarly work and team science.
