For many health science educators, mental health is a top priority in supporting students, colleagues, or themselves. Thankfully, the Mental Health First Aid movement is gaining traction across the country and around the world. As a result of this training, communities gain skills in recognizing signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, in offering and providing initial help, and in connecting someone to appropriate support.
• Discuss the prevalence and impact of mental health and substance use challenges,
• Explain the concept of person-first language and how it reduces stigma and promotes well-being recovery,
• Practice non-judgmental listening, one of the steps outlined in Mental Health First Aid Training, and
• Share how your organization can become a part of the Mental Health First Aid movement.
